'The daisy,' he murmured. The plant swayed slightly. 'Quite right.' 'But -, how, how?' A low sound that might have been a chuckle came to his ears. The daisy tilted toward the girl. 'First of all, you had better reasure her. She appears quite frightened.' John swung toward the girl, who was staring at him with frightened eyes. Smiling, he took her hand. 'Don't be frightened, Peggy, I'm not crazy. First, though, don't say anything, as I am quite deaf -' 'Not quite,' broke in a deeper voice. John looked up to where a rose was swaying in his window box. 'If she speaks in a very, very high tone, you will be able to hear her.' Full of hope [,?] John repeated this to Peggy. Puzzled more than ever, she cleared her throat. 'What happened?' she squeaked. A happy smile blossomed on John's face. 'I heard you!' [John?] whooped. 'Come on' and he started out, only to turn back. 'Will you be able to talk tonight?' he asked the daisy anxiously. 'Just drop some water on me, and I'll be all right for two or three days,' murmured the flower.
