4 S.F.CONVENTIONEER "Clear emergency landing cradle no. 5.Clear emergency landing cradle no.5," Boomed the mechanical voice and men scrambled to do its bidding. In less time than it takes to tell it, emergency cradle no.5 was cleared and its springs made ready to receive the shock of a super-space ship landing. "All clear," spoke the foreman of the clearing crew, into his pocket phone. "Stand by," boomed the mechanical voice again. "Space ship S.N. K69,coming in, badly damaged. Stand by to help ship's new crew on moment of landing." A second later a loud whistling sound was heard, and a heavy body headed for the cradlr with astounding speed. There was a straining of springs and a feeble rocket discharge as the rocket landed. usually a space ship lands quite lightly, but this one seemed to have most of its tubes rayed away, so hence its heavy landing. As soon as the ship had come to rest, the ground crew rushed tp it and dragged out its two occupants, and rushed away from the ship.A moment later it burst open as a large explosion shook the whole space-port. A seam in the ship's fuel tanks had burst open by the crash landing and its highly explosive fuel had reached the hot motors, resulting in a giant explosion, leaving the ship and cradle in a mass of ruins. The ships occupants were given first aid and were found to be in good shape, having only passed out by the force of the landing. A strange combination were these two flying companions. But this queer looking person was a real companion to Bob, the name of the earth man, and would willingly gave his life to save that of his friend. His eyes were large
