22 COSMIC TALES that gathering, this object, I know not what it is, was buried in the ground for some unknown purpose. then, soon after, came the dark age when man fought man. The age which reduced us to our present condition. Somehow, this gleaming thing has survived, untouched. I do not know for how long. It is also said that therein lies our hopes of future existence. I do not see how or why. Many times have I racked my brains asking myself "Why? Why?" but I cannot discover its secret. That is all I know about the thing. i am glad you are here for you may be able to help us who are sorely distressed. The hand of fate, seemingly has guided you here. You are wise, wise like our once-great forefathers. You will be able to help us?" "Yes, that we will", Loor answered, "When the new dawn arises we will return to our ship and fly it back here. there are many implements on board which may be of great service to us. But now it is late, my friend, and we have had a most tiresome journey. We bid you goodnight and a sound slumber." "Good night and sound slumber to you, too, my good friends, I have many hopes for tomorrow." The leader turned and headed for his hut, his shoulders unbowed and head held high as if a great burden had been removed from his mind. Tain, gazing sadly at his retreating back, said quietly,"A great man, this Jack, and these Earthpeople are of a great race. The Lord knows how far they might have advanced if only they had not been warlike!" Turning despondently, they prepared for sleep. Chapter III The Metal Capsule The entire group of villagers was thronged about the spaceship as the two Venerians stepped out of their space ship. They stared, awedly, at the curved lines and beauty of the giant object. The sun gloriously lit up the beautiful rainbow-colored ship, rendering it stranger yet. Their attention was distracted shortly, however, by the two aliens as they handed peculiar implements to certain men. These implements were quickly recognized as shovels, though imcomparably superior to their crude tools. Shouldering the shovels, the men trudged their way to the bullet-shaped tube. Energetically, they began digging the earth from out around their quarry. Soon, they had dug to the bottom of the metal cylinder. Loor, Tain and the leader clambered down into the pit and examined the cylinder with great interest. The end which had been hidden was capped by a curious device which the Venerians concluded was to be used for hoisting. Puzzled as to why it should be located at that end rather than the other, they finally thought than an earthquake or some effect of the war had turned the tube upsidedown. Quickly, the mysterious object was hoisted out through the aid of small though powerful dynamo belonging to the Venerians. The villagers were amazed at the great power of the visitors who could control the very small to the very great. Upon measuring, the cylinder, it was found to be twelve croos in length (7 feet, 6 inches). Loor, meanwhile, secured a blowtorch with which to open the cylinder. After studying it for a few moments, he cut at a mark circling the capsule. He plunged his hand inside and extracted different objects at which everyone gaped in surprise. Loor exclaimed as he fingered a small, shiny roll, "Tain, look! Films, they used films then. Why, we have a complete storehouse of information here. Jack!" he turned to the leader, " you must teach us your language, for if these
