Detours September 1940 1:4 FROM "ON THE DOT" IN "NEW FANDOM" VOLUME 2 NO. 2 "Two more issues of New Fandom will be issued before the summer, they will be dated June 1940 and appear early in May and July 1940 that will be mailed out June [September crossed out] 1st. Our next issue after that will be dated October 1940 and will be mailed out Sept. 1st. Three more issues by September 1st? You'll have to go like hell to meet that optimistic and phantom schedule, Jimmy my boy. The summer is almost over and I am still waiting for the June and July issues. Your title "On the Dot" was certainly naive, to say the least. FROM A FOOTNOTE IN "COSMIC TALES" VOLUME 2 NO. 2 "So you're going to miss the next issue of Cosmic Tales, eh. Well, if you saw the material coming up for the next issue, I think you'd change your mind pretty quick. Why not turn to page 30 and find out." That's what I call editorial frankness. Richard, my boy, I followed the instructions and turned to page 30 and what do you think I found? Two addresses -- yours and mine -- and nothing else. Swell material for another issue, eh? ------------ Friend Swisher scooped on the some good ones. Here they are, comments and all. FROM 'FANTASY NEWS' VOLUME 4 NO. 2 "'Waters of Wrath', a 10,000 word novelette, (sic.) by Arthur K. Barnes is a futuristic variation of the best seller, 'Grapes of Wrath'". OUCH FROM 'PROPHECY OF DOOM' IN FUTURE FICTION JULY '40 "...he had ever been a cold-hearted leader, who did without nothing that he could not take." Come again, please, on them there negatives. ------------------------- Editor Chauvenet spotted a cute one in Le Zombie's Fan Press Digest (in Vol. 3 No. 8) "With this mag, we begin a more popular method of rating 'em: ten in ace-high..." and then 'Stardust' is rated '10 plus'. What, a joker in the deck?"
