Detours September 1940 1:4 ----------------------------- Sidetracks...Ray Pauley tells us the Ambroy story was Wings of Lucifer, not Wings of Pluto...damon knight wants to know in what issues of the Brundage period Weird Tales Keller had a 2 or 3 part serial in which a college graduate had himself framed for murder in order to get into a mysterious privately owned prison for lifers, to investigate same...We would be greatly pleased if anyone could tell us title, author, and magazine, with regard to a sf story we read long ago, telling of a man, driven on by a fly inside his spacesuit, who reunited the two halves of the spaceship, which had flown apart when the connecting cable snapped. We are particularly interested in tracing this story, because its presentation of that method of creating "artificial gravity" clearly antedated At the Perihelion, the only other story we remember which advanced the same system...Not long ago we spent a few hours in Washington and were sold an FAPA membership by Elmer Perdue. Places are still open, we believe...We had always fancied ourself as a strong candidate for the coveted title, Most Skilled Creator of Disorder in the Sf World, but we ungrudgingly recognize Lester del Ray as a superior. His room is a masterpiece of the arcane art, and our rubbish-and-litter-strewn editorial premises seem almost austere by comparison...The increased availability of Merrit, thanks to F.F.M. and F.F.N. is an unmixed boon; we like his stories, by and large, despite our criticism of Moon Pool some pages previously...We have several copies of Wonder, vol. 4 no. 12, and one of them is printed entirely on semi-slick paper -- can anyone explain this? Or was Gernsback merely playing around with paper, using a different system from JWC's?...We were surprised to receive a Sykona postal mentioning his recent marriage -- the first we'd heard of it. We wish him luck. To our knowledge, that makes 5 married fans -- Swisher, Koenig, Tucker, and Marvis Manning comprising the other four...Does anyone recall a silent movie version of Rider Haggard's She? If so, what was is it like? We only found an old clipping which mentioned it...Class is dismissed for this issue -- but the quiz will be back next month with a new wrinkle in it...'sall for now.
