REPORT ON THE BOOKCON Paul Spencer and his friend Russ Whitman are the unofficial heads of an unofficial book-publishing committee to look into the details of photo-offset printing (such as the service offered by the Hobson Press) with a view towards publishing future volumes under the imprint of the NFFF. For information on such book publishing, see the August issue of this mouthpiece. Spencer believes the committee should be all ready to function when matters are cleared with Hobson, that they should be made an official committee with power to act, subject to the Directorate of course. Spencer and Whitman have presented two plans of action, as follows: Plan 1: a board of editors, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Directorate, would select material for book publication. Various members of this editorial board would specialize in the format, the distribution, the accounting, and the overall supervision, in addition to their duties of choosing material. Plan 2: the Board of Directors selecting the material, with two men (the two committeemen) supervising the over-all production and distribution. It is assumed that in both plans the two present committeemen would be given the key positions in accordance with their long work on the matter. All the above is the gist of several letters from Spencer to me. One of the first acts of the new administration should be to settle this matter so as to allow the book committee to proceed, or whatever. -- Bob Tucker ----------------------- Speer's comments are scattered over several pages this time. ----------------------- Editor's Comments An idea or two more for one-man projects: Probably a number of fen are like me, unwilling to buy the magazines and read the junk, but would like to be able to keep up on the development of the Lemurian ideology and understand allusions in the fan press to Dero etcetera (apparently Lemurianism, like the Cosmic Circle, is going to leave a legacy of humorous folklore). So how about some energetic member writing a fair-sized article, setting forth in orderly manner all the allegedly factual background of the Shaver stories? He could publish it himself, or place it thru the Manuscript Bureau. Another article (to proceed from the ridiculous to the sublime) might be written now giving the history of North America from 1950 to date according to the Baldy stories, making as good guesses as may be about the locations of Pueblo, Huron, American Gun, etc., and charting the Burkhalter family and any others that may run thru several stories of the series.
