-VICTORY- Editorial comment. While reading through my latest parcel of fanzines sent through FAPA to all members, I came across one devoted to the problem of TECHNOCRACY. Attached to a propaganda leaflet of this organization was a mimeod zine, titled LET'S LOOK AT THE RECORD. The editor announces himself as one RUSSELL J. HODGKINS of 1903 West 84th Place, Los Angeles, California. I was vaguely interested in reading what Mr. Hodgkins had to say on this organization, which seems to have made quite a hit in the groups of fans on the coast, if the article by Mr. Sam Moskowitz & James V. Taurasi of New York fandom are to be taken in their full value. Whereas the Moskowitz-Taurasi team seemed to have made a big "giving-off-steam" about the matter, Russell Hodgkins has carefully analized his points most interestingly and thoroughly for its good qualities as he sees it. For this, he should be given praise - as it shows he is the better writer & publisher. However, taking in hand Van Houten's article & R. Hodgkins, I must essentially come to a draw to which stand I take. I don't know neither or any of the chaps involved in this battle of words on Technocracy, nor as such do I show in preference in any choice or opinions I might express on the matter. Therefore, it is with a cool conclusive mind that I express my own opinions on the matter and feel them to be just and well founded. In analizing my viewpoints, I will thrust aside the fight taken up my Mr. Van Houten & Mr. Hodgkins, and stick to the propaganda leaflet attacked with Mr. Hodgkins mimo-zine. Firstly: Technocracy URGES TOTAL CONSCRIPTION! Such a tripish thing would indeed wreck havoc on this nation. Who would run the machines of war? Who would produce the material that helps the men on the fighting front win the war? Who? Women, also are taking their place alongside the men in this war, so they also would be out. Apparently, what Mr. Technocracy means, near total conscription. There are many such type of businesses and matters that, though not connected with the war, are vital to its carrying on and success. Conscription of these men would terribly handicap the war effort. Farmers need farm hands to help harvest the crops, or should they go to waste and thus impair the health of some excellent soldiers, who might have turned the tide of war? In some cases, this is actually happening, and is one fault of the conscription plan at its present moment. What then if persons insane, dekrepit, etc. were drafted in the fighting fronts, what good would they be. No, I rather think they can be of more good here on the Home front. -UNITED STATES OF AMERICA- To me TECHNOCRACY smells too much like the form of rule held in RUSSIA under the grim name of COMMUNISM. We here in the United States of America want nothing to do with other isms or semblances. Like the defunct AMERICA FIRST COMMITTEE, which the unhonorable Ex Colonel Charles Augustus Lindberg was so closely connected. Technocracy endeavors to cover its true purpose and intent that is: to organize an ism, like Dictatorship too much sounding like MEIN KAUMP (excuse spelling) which Hitler took delight in writing. I think there is some good in it all, BUT, the time has not come to talk of such things. Merely the Walrus would be fool enough to do so, to pass the time away. Maybe, Technocracy Inc....think they have a better chance than the WALRUS to make something and their talk...but I doubt it. America for Americans. Democracy for the United States of America. It was good enough for our Forefathers before us, so it's good enough for us.
