PAGE 2 FANTASY-NEWS IS THE PRO FIELD BEGINNING TO CRACK An editorial by James V. Taurasi With the news that both ASTONISHING and SUPER SCIENCE going quarterly, we began to wonder whether the pro field is beginning to crack, and the rush of new stf magazines over, or is it just settling itself to a new level? Let's look at the record. MARVEL and DYNAMIC were the first hit, they went out with MARVEL hanging on,just hanging on, but the power is gone. SCIENCE FICTION and FUTURE FICTION hit the skids early in 1940, having published only 3 issues of each that year, and this year looks the same, if not worst. Their only strong point there is SCIENCE FICTION QUARTERLY, but now Hornig is gone, and.......time will tell. UNKNOWN went bi-monthly early this year, but still hanging on, TWS followed shorty and will probablynever again be a monthly. In spit of a few uplifts here and there, the pro field has been going down and down for over a year now. ASTONISHING and SUPER SCIENCE being the latest to be hit. The question now seems to be, how long can these magazines hold out? Cant hey continue appearing every 3 or 4 months? Or will they die out completely? The stf field is beginning to crach and they are cracking simply because of the poor material and poor handling used in putting the magazines together. FANTASTIC ADVENTURES on the other hand has become a monthly, tho a few months ago it had more than one foot in the grave. Can it be that the public likes that type of material or it it just a Burroughs shot in the arm? FANTASTIC NOVELS has also collapsed. Why? The stories were time tested an good? Or was it improper handling? Their talk of a quarterly may mean something. Yes the pro field can stand more stf magazines. Some good ones! James V.
