FROM THE READERS' CIRCLE VINCENT MANNING, of the Literature, Science and Hobbies Club: "STARS" a volume of verse & crystal thoughts, came yesterday; and I have thoroughly read the contents. Larry, "STARS" is swell & truly worthwhile. In my estimation it is one of the finest fan publications ever to appear, altho I am afraid that it will not bring in the appreciation it deserves. The straight Science-fiction groups of fans will probably find but little interest in it. Here at the club I am about the only one that cares much for poetry & philosophic deductions, so I imagine that you will find it about the same over the country. I may be wrong - I hope I am - it may be extremely popular. HARRY WARNER, Jr., Editor of Spaceways and Horizons: Stars is excellent. Practically all of the material is well worth reprinting--the only thing I don't like is the Hays jingle, which brings back horrid recollections of when I had to memorize poems by Susan Coolidge. Maybe I'm just an evil person, though. You're welcome, of course, to quote from Spaceways any time you wish.. MARY GNAEDINGER, Editor of Famous Fantastic Mysteries & Fantastic Novels: "Stars" is original, and I think particularly acceptable to fantastic readers. There is something poetic about the subject fantasy, of itself. Verse seems a perfectly natural form for its expression. And your selections are excellent. PAUL FREEHAFER, Editor of Polaris: I got the copy of Stars and want to congratulate you on one of the nicest pieces of work to come from fandom in quite some time. An excellent selection, well mimeographed, and something to be proud of. Thanks for the copy -- I'll have an extra through the FAPA, but I'll be glad to have two. ERLE KORSHAK, in Midwest News & Views: This issue is filled with beautiful fragments of poetry and philosophy. The idea behind it could be express by John Keat's [Keats'] poem "Ode on a Grecian Urn"---"'Beauty is truth, truth beauty',--that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know"---We are hoping for more issues with more beautiful, and interesting cullings in them. DICK CRAIN, present Editor of Cosmic Tales, post-scripts: That "Stars" was pretty good--thanx. FRED W. FISCHER, very popular science-fiction columnist, writes: Pardon my lack of enthusiasm, but 'Stars' would not have appealed to me even with cover by myself. The cover, in fact, was the best feature. (I don't blame you--figuring there might have been two issues of Golden Atom in the same period. However, I hope you like this number; you should, together with Lylda! Editor) LOUIS RUSSELL CHAUVENET, Editor of Detours: I thought Stars was interesting (tho perhaps you are fonder of mystical thought than I am) and hope you enjoyed Sardonyx in the FAPA mailing. FRANCIS J. LITZ, Editor of (last year's) Scenes of Fantasy, had but one word: "Magnificent!" (All the Editor of Stars can do now is to think you all sincerely for your comments, and he hopes that you find this issue up to expectations)
