Darlene Wind CIASU Chairperson TO: Chicano-Indian American Student Union FROM: Eddie Ildefonso, Jr. EIJR Coordinator of Spanish-Speaking People Info. DATE: February 8, 1978 THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA Special Support Services Educational Opportunities Program 207 Calvin Hall Iowa City, Iowa 52242 (319) 353-7170 I've been asked to provide the CIASU with a position statement as to the interpretation of my personal and professional relationship to the Union. To begin with I've been involved with CIASU and the CIACC since August of 1972. During this time period I've served as the co-chairperson and chairperson in 1974, El Teatro from 1972-1977, Los Bailadores 1974-75, Preschool Drector from 1974-75, and Resident Manager of the CIACC from 1975 until June of 1977. I've also served on several planning committees for our annual conferences. With this in mind, you shall always have my personal commitment to the further development of the CIASU and CIACC. It's this past experience and involvement that has enabled me to obtain my current position, as the Coordinator of Spanish-Speaking Peoples Information within the Department of Special Support Services. The question of whether or not I would be able to allow the Union or Center's leadership to make decisions without my input has recently arisen. I believe this is a valid question. So much so, that Special Support Services had to ask the same question when I was interviewing for the position I currently hold. This is where I would like to begin to provide you with my interpretation of my professional involvement with the CIASU and CIACC. The answer to the above question is of course yes. Yes in that I will not interfere with CIASU and CIACC decision making process. I totally believe in the autonomy of both bodys to make decisions and to carry them out. However, I shall always be available for advise and consultation on major issues. I shall like to stress that I will only involve myself with major issues. Major issues that will directly and indirectly affect the CIASU and CIACC. My participation should come about as a result of an invitation by the leadership to aid in the decision making process of whatever that major issue may be. I would also like to stress that I will not attend any of the Union Officers or CIACC staff meetings. Unless, of course, if my presence is necessary. Also, I probably will not attend all of the Union meetings. I have found that about 60% of my time is spent in meetings. Of which most occur during the evening hours. Knowing this you will have to understand that I have to begin to be more selective about my meetings. In the last three months my family and I have been averaging getting home around 10:30 p.m. about 3 days a week. I have a private life and I intend to keep it. I need to have time for myself, for my wife and children. My lack of participation in the many meeting scheduled for this semester, is an attempt on my part to separate my professional life from my private one. I don't believe that I need to participate in every single meeting hammering out details. However, you should always remember that I'll always be accessible to the Union, Center, and to the students in general.
