DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL SUPPORT SERVICES COORDINATOR OF SPANISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES INFORMATION BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY: To serve as a public relations liaison for Spanish-speaking persons. To assist the Assistant Director of Admissions in the locating, identifying, and counseling of low-income and minority students for matriculation at The University of Iowa. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To serve as a resource person to the Assistant Director of Admissions and to the Graduate and Professional Student Programs Consultant by assisting each in the planning for the identification and counseling of prospective students. a) Plan and conduct visitations to high schools, community colleges, colleges, community agencies, and organizations for the purpose of establishing personal contacts and identifying prospective students. b) Meet with prospective and admitted students to explain University policies and procedures and to answer questions on academic programs and campus life. c) Maintain an informal communications network with prospective students; students' parents and guardians; university colleges; academic and student services departments; and external organizations and colleges. To assist the Coordinator for Academic Support Programs with the academic counseling of students as required. Act as a consultant to the Minority Programs Consultant (MPC) on matters pertaining to the Chicano and Native American Cultural Center. Serve as the Department of Special Support Services' liaison to the College of Education's Multicultural and Bilingual-Bicultural Programs. Establish and maintain a multicultural lecture series (facilitated in conjunction with the academic departments and the MPC). Assist academic departments and the Affirmative Action Office in the identification and hiring of minority faculty. To provide interpretation services to areas of the University (e.g., University Hospitals) that may come in contact with Spanish-speaking persons of limited English-speaking ability. Be a Departmental liaison to Spanish-speaking communities. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Direction is received from the Director of Special Support Services. General supervision is received from the Associate Director of Special Support Services. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over supporting staff. QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree is required; Master's preferred. The ability to read, write, and speak in both English and Spanish is required. A minimum of 2 years experience in the position involving work with minority and low-income students in a counseling situation, college, community organization, or service agency is highly desirable. Candidates must be willing to travel extensively.
