THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA OFFICE OF SPECIAL SUPPORT SERVICES SOCIAL SERVICES ADVISOR/COORDINATOR OF NATIVE AMERICAN INFORMATION BASIC FUNCTION: To develop, coordinate, and administer University and community social services for all Special Support Services students and to coordinate information on Native American affairs for prospective and currently enrolled Native American students and Native American communities throughout Iowa and the midwest. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Serve as a resource person to the Assistant Director of Admissions and assist in the planning for identifying and counseling prospective students 2. Plan and conduct visitations to high schools and community colleges for the purpose of identifying prospective students and establishing personal contacts 3. Meet with prospective and admitted students to explain University admission policies and procedures and answer questions on academic programs and campus life 4. Correspond with students and parents, departments, and colleges within The University and with other institutions 5. Serve as a liaison to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Assistant Director of Financial Aids to insure proper coordination of services 6. Refer students and prospective students to appropriate referral service to meet basic living needs such as medical assistance, financial aid, and housing 7. Coordinate information between University Housing and other housing agencies (Mark IV) and SSS students and staff 8. Meet with various on- and off-campus groups to explain social services programs and policies and to obtain feedback on them 9. Serve on a community social service agency committee to achieve visability and enrich personal expertise 10. Assist in identifying funding sources and writing proposals for funding programs 11. Maintain records and prepare special and periodic reports as required 12. Assist in developing and conducting of orientation programs of various types 13. Assist in the supervision of support staff as required SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision of general support staff and student employees SUPERVISION RECEIVED: General supervision from the Associate Director and direction from the Director of SSS QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required; a Master's degree preferred. Significant work experience in social services, social work, counseling, or psychological advisement is necessary. Experience in the identifying and counseling of prospective students is highly desirable. Considerable experience in working with low-income and/or minority persons is essential.
