The University of Iowa Iowa City, Iowa 52242 Special Support Service Educational Opportunities Program 310 Calvin Hall (319) 353-7170 June 13, 1979 Vice President Philip Hubbard Office of the President 101 Jessup Hall Dear Vice President Hubbard: In light of the recent letter to you from Hector Perez on behalf of the Chicano Indian American Student Union, I'd like to provide some background information for you. Mr. David Merchan first contact Special Support Services concerning the Chicano Indian American Cultural Center managership during the first week of May (he spoke, on separate occasions, with both Leo Fields and Eddie Ildefonso -- I was out of town). On May 10, we received a letter from Mr. Merchan expressing interest in the position and a letter from Mr. Hector Perez in support of Mr. Merchan's candidacy. On May 16, a letter went out to both Mr. Perez and Mr. Merchan acknowledging the receipt of the prior correspondence. In the letter to Mr. Merchan, I requested some background information for the staff to review prior to his interview (the date for which would be set after the information from him was provided). I did not hear from Mr. Merchan until June 5, when the autobiographical sketch was delivered to my office. Since I was going on vacation, I asked my secretary to call Mr. Merchan and arrange a time convenient to him for his interview. This was completed on June 7, and verified by a memo sent out to Mr. Merchan on June 11. His interview was set (and is still scheduled) for Friday, June 15, at 9:00 a.m. I have and appointment scheduled with you during the week of June 18, and when we get together, we can discuss this in more detail. Also, another topic of Mr. Perez' letter is the process being followed in hiring a Project Director for Upward Bound. As you are aware, the Project Director of Upward Bound position has been publicly advertised and will be filled according to The University's affirmative action search procedures (the request to advertise was sent May 29 and we received approval by Affirmative Action on June 1). I'm looking forward to talking with you next week. We have a number of issues to discuss and these can be added to the agenda. Please let me know if I can provide additional information. Welcome back, M. Colleen Jones, Director MCJ/hab Enclosure cc: Hector Perez
