And none of us should forget what this center stands for, or the people who came before us that made it possible. The original Chicano and American Indian Cultural Center was established in mid August in 1971 at 115 North Clinton and the original purposes were: 1) To provide a permanent setting for Chicano and American Indian students to gather in an informal atmosphere reflecting the need and interests of Chicano and American Indian students in the university community. 2) To provide a center for the cultural expression and enrichment of Chicano and American Indian students in the University community., 3) To provide an area for academic development for students. I share this with you because we need to understand our past to move forward. We need to understand where we come from to engage our vision for the future. From national leaders to students who have passed through the center in the last 25 years to those of us who are here today we are all a part of shaping history. We are part of each other and this fact must never be lost. With each generation we pave the way for others to follow and to build upon. Simply put we continue to transform our world by adding to the legacy of each generation. 11
