Boycotts Support Strikes by UFW, Farah Workers [image of flag?] The Iowa city United Farm Workers Support Committee continued its campaign to gain local support for farm-workers with a solidarity rally which was held October 12 on the university Pentacrest. The rally, which featured several speakers and "El Teatro Zapatista", received a large turn-out from both the university and the community. The Support Committee is currently leafletting university dormitory dining areas to encourage people to boycott non-UFW lettuce and grapes. The university administration has taken a stance of "neutrality" and continues to serve both UFW and scab lettuce and grapes in their cafeterias. This places the responsibility directly on the people who eat in cafeterias to demand Black Eagle (UFW) lettuce and grapes. These local efforts mark the continuation of the successful picket of the A&P Food Chain last winter and spring. Pickets were held at both of Iowa city's A&P stores, convincing shoppers to turn away in substantial numbers and crippling business for several months. The immediate plans for the local support group is to continue dormitory leafletting, with possible picketing of local commercial chain outlets. More help is needed to advance the gains of the United Farm Workers -- who have been struggling for more than ten years to establish their union and gain collective bargaining rights in the face of corporate farm managers determined to keep farmworker living conditions at a bare survival level. To help, boycott non-UFW lettuce and grapes. Call 353-4753 for more information. The farmworkers struggle is duplicated in the case of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers, AFL-CIO, and their dispute with the Farah manufacturing company. Exploited Farah workers, 85 per cent female and a large majority Mexican-American, are tryin to form a union in spite of company interferences. Local efforts include picketing Iowa City stores: Rosheks, Ewers and St. Clair-Johnson, all of whom sell Farah slacks and thus contribute to the plight of the clothing workers in the Southwest.
