WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW by Joe Torres Today the Chicano is speaking out, what I question is what we are speaking out against-not the fact we are finally standing up for our rights. To clarify myself I'll illustrate some of the trends taking place in the various movements. Chavez is carrying the plight of the migrant workers in California; Tijerina is the charismatic underdog Chicano in Now Mexico, and organizations such as LULAC and GI FORUM appear to be middle class orientated with interaction on more of a social nature. Of course these groups could be expounded to include all the organizations in the movement, but for emphasis the existing examples should suffice. What I'm emphasizing is the fact the organizations are not unified toward acommom [sic] goal. Granted, each of their dauses [sic] merit considerable attention, but I think the end results could be obtained faster if the fight was carried on by a united effort as opposed to individual factions fighting separately of each other. There exist in our society many elements. Accordingly, they are congruent on one point-we have to take what we can get as there is little we can do about it anyway. To paraphrase Mills, there exist in our society a power elite-business, government, and the military. Since these privileged few subject the mass of society to their dictums, it is from this condition the missing substance of unity can be achieved. We need to realign our forces and direct our efforts as one element and not as particles. What you believe is the important thing, and this article is mainly written to stimulate you into thought provoking rebuttal. The point i debating an issue is not the fact you are able to out "head talk" the other person, but you and the other party are able to reach a consensus. I know the readers of this article have opinions on many of the cntroversial [sic] issues taking place today, so why be strictly a reader?---Practice your penmanship and get involved for a change. ********************************** Many of the attitudes felt by Gavachos toward Chicanos today are rooted in occurrences of many years past. It is well to remember that many of the individuals who are making policy in our public schools, in the news media, and as heads of large corporations, were in their late teens during WW II when incidents such as the one below occured. If you want to learn a bit about the history of the Chicano people in the U.S.,go to your nearest library and ask to see Los Angeles newspapers from June 4 to June 9, 1943, ********************************** [silhouette of man] "SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE......" (taken from the GI Forumeer,Oct.1971) "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it..." ---George Santayana SUBVERSIVE? - The attire worn by this young man was considered "indicative of a subversive character" in Los Angeles 1943 City-condoned riots.
