Here is where we begin Los Angeles, Calif. A group of 13 Chicanos from the L. A. area who went to mexico last summer in search of their cultural heritage, returned with renewed enthusiasm for their Raza. "It blew my mind just to see the genius of my people," said Edward Pardo, a Pomona College student. The students visited the pyramids, the famous Museo de Anthropologia and many art museums to gain appreciation of Mexico's ancient civilization. They met with President Luis Echeverria Alvarez, studied at the University of Mexico and had lunch with Mrs. Emiliano Zapata, widow of the revolutionary and agrarian reformist. The group also gained a new perspective on the Chicano in the U.S. "I found myself defending America," said Bertha Guajardo. "I was able to see it more objectively. Suddenly I see why the Chicano is frustrated here; the riots don't surprise me. We are projecting now. before, we were silent. Editor's note--Too bad that they had to go all the way to Mexico to find out the accomplishments of Chicanos. They should have found it out here verdad? [insert] BUY UNION GRAPES ONLY! A NOTE OF THANKS At this time, I would like to thank all those who have helped with the formation of "laverinto". Many thanks to all who have typed, written articles, and helped put it together. I only hop that this newsletter will help to spark enthusiasm to all of our hermanos y hermanas. This newsletter was designed for expressing ourselves--La Raza--Expressing ourselves in poem, short story, essay, etc. Also many articles from other Chicano newspapers are "borrowed" because you nver see them in Anglo papers. Borrowing from an old cliche "this newsletter is only as good as you make it". So, Raza, we want to hear from you--what you think, what you feel. We want to hear from you who have been jut too busy until now to write us. As for the people who have been helping us all along, thanks again and keep on chuggin.
