Mexican Americans have always had difficulty making up their minds what to call themselves . In New Mexico they call themselves Spanish--Americans. In other parts of the southwest they call themselves Americans of Mexican descent, people with Spanish surnames or Hispanos. Why, ask Mexican Americans, can't we just call ourselves Americans? Chicanos are trying to explan why not. Mexican Americans, though natives of the southwest, are on the lowest rung scholastically, economically, socially ,and politically. Chicanos feel cheated. They want to effect change. NOW. Mexican Americans have to live with the stinging fact that the word Mexican is the synonym for inferior in many parts of the Southwest. This, in a city politically sophisticated enough to have three Negro councilmen! Chicano, then, are merely fighting to become "Americans." Yes, but with a Chicano outlook. One loud clap is in order for Greg Vasquez, Pedro Rael and Augie Olvera. It should be noted that all of the above are well on the road to recovery after having donated one pint each at the Blood Bank. As a result of their bravery, the Union is $45 (American money) richer. If we have anymore willing donors please call 351-0884 for info. Also for any person under 21 slips are available at the Union. [hand drawn face] LA RAZA yesterday, today, today and tomorrow; Why.....wait!! ......i have come home, i wait no more. ...yesterday, i broke my shackles: of those shackles, i forge a knife i hold my new strong knife stabbing the spirit of injustice .......brought against me. i am.... La Raza; my heart, my breath....... ........my blood. i am La Raza i am....Chicano i...stand straight and proud.
