V CHICANO CLASS For those who haven't attended the classes on Monday evenings, you have been missing out on La Raza. It's still not too late to get back in on topics dealing with our Chicano culture. Topics still to be discussed are: Chicano psychology, ZApata, Chicanos and the Law, and more. This Monday at 7:30 Pete Rael will give an overview on the Chicanos and the law. Know your rights-come to the Monday class! There are still openings for those students wishing to present a topic. Pick any topic you wish to discuss, be a member of a great house with friendly people. Skip that Monday night beer at Joe's and come see what's it's all about on Mondays, then go to Joe's. If you are interested, please contact Arturo Ramirez at the Chicano Indian American Center. The classes meet every Monday at 7:30 p.m. SUPPORTIVE COUNSELOR Aaron Rivera, Supportive Counselor with Special Support Services, is available to assist you on any matter with any University problems, tutoring, dorm hassles, U_bills etc. Don't be afraid to give hime a call because he's a nice guy (Editor's personal opinion). Call anytime at: Chicano house 353-4753 SSS office 353-3201 Home phone 338-1676 If unable to reach Aaron be sure to leave a message. Yes, somebody cares if you live or rot in this University. Muscatine pre-school On behalf of the Chicano Indian American Student Union, we wish to thank Pete Rael for his time and effort in organizing the Muscatine pre-school program for area migrant students. Each Saturday Pete and other Chicano volunteers have been giving their free time to go to the Muscatine community to tutor migrant children. About ten to fifteen children attend each class, so there is a teacher-student ration of about three to one. It is not the purpose of these classes to take the place of their regular teachers, but it will make a big difference to these Chicanitos when they are growing up in school. Not all teachers have to be Anglo. Volunteers leave each Saturday at 12:30 from the Chicano House. Transportation is provided, so no hassles with rides. Tutoring will also be done on Thursdays--check the notice at the Chicano House for specific time and dates this will begin. I highly encourage any Chicano member to donate just a little time to volunteer. Show that somebody cares... CHICANO INDIAN LIBRARY The Center recently received the following books for the Chicano Indian Library. Brothers Under the Skin, by Carey McWilliams, The Mexicans by Victor Alba, The Mexican American People by Grebler, Moore and Guzman. Some new books on the American Indian have also just arrived. They are: American Indian Prose and Poetry by Margot Astov, Indians of North America by Harold E. Driver, This Land Was Theirs by Oswalt. If you know of a book that should be in this library, come to the House and we'll try and order it.
