5 HARD LUCK TALE OR HARD ASS AMERICAN ?[[end underline]] A Mexican national with a history of psychiatric problems hijacked an airliner from New Mexico to Los Angeles, last Thursday, then surrendered his gun after telling newsmen called to the plane about problems of the poor and a story of his own. The man turned over the gun, which was unloaded, to the plane pilot after a two hour interview, that was broadcast over radio and T.V. He was then taken into the custody of the F.B.I. The hijacker commanded the Frontier Airlines 737 jetliner for more than seven hours, including five hours on the ground at Lost Angeles International Airport. He allowed the 27 passengers to disembark, but kept four crew members and later, three Spanish-speaking newsmen on the plane at gunpoint while he gave a rambling speech in Spanish over the radio and T.V. The man was identified as Ricardo Chavez-Ortiz, 37, a Mexican father of eight who has lived in East Los Angeles and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Federal Aviation Administration in Washington said he had a history of psychiatric problems. Stopping right here, you should stop and ask yourselves, is this just another crazy man hijacking our friendly skys? Just from reading this AP story you kind of get the idea the man had shrink problems, so anything he may say is just phony balony. I mean just because he is a Mexican, why should anybody pay attention to a poor spic. Read on Raza. The interview was heard by thousands of viewers and listeners in the Los Angeles area. The hijackers words were carried on Spanish language stations and translation was provided on Television stations whose cameramen provided pictures of the captive plane. In the broadcast on the plane, Ortiz sat . on the floor smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee and animatedly discussing with the three newsmen the treatment of minorities. The newsmen assumed his .22-caliber revolver was loaded. Ortiz talked about injustices to Mexican*Americans, Blacks, Orientals, and other minorities. He described his life as a chef, pilot, and mechanic in Mexico. He mentioned low wages and the deteriorating environment. "My sons are in trouble. My life isn't worth a single peanut. What we want is the justice we have coming," the hijacker told a police officer. The other 27 passengers were let off the plane about 12:50 P.M. about 2 1/2 hours after the plane landed. I guess that's about all the Associated Press had to say about the hijack. Funny the never said more about the speech. Why couldn't we hear more about the injustices being done to minorities? If a guy can hold up an airliner for about 2 1/2 hours, let's hear what he has to say. EDITORIAL Should Chicanos Strike? War, war, war, when is this thing in Southeast Asia going to end? What should Raza do about it? About 300 University of Iowa students turned out Friday rally at the student union to protest the escalation in North Vietnam and found an ally in university President, Willard Boyd.
