EDITORIAL EDITORIAL EDITORIAL EDITORIAL Mi Vida Loca + EDITORIAL EDITORIAL EDITORIAL EDITORIAL EDITORIAL EDITORIAL EDITORIAL EDITORIAL + Antonio Zavala VIVA LA RAZA Chicano students exist in a great vacuum in the immense and impersonal business-like universities in the United States. Nosotros, los estudiantes that come from the barrio, often come to the Anglo universities to bear witness to our own alienation. Alienation within the marble, concrete slabs of academia, wishy washy gavachito organizations (like sailing clubs, fraternities, trascendental med ect ect) and to be de-culturalized by hamburger-mania and pizzas. Far away from el sudor, la mugre, el ruido, los gritos, y el dolor of the barrios the estudiante Chicano is brainwashed and polished off to accept a job dressed up with a dash of urgency and activism: Youth corps, Urban corps, Teacher Corps, CHANCE, SER, and so on. What was once vato that we could read and write and also swear often turns into an hacienda(barrio) patroncito for the countless of reactionary worthless government funded programs. Also amidst the foggy alienation of the gavacho university some Chicano students also become dull, bland and ineffective. Unable to cope with being poor and brown these students wish to have parallel college organizations to the gavachito students. Que los gavachitos have a fraternity well here comes a Chicano fraternity. Que los gavachitos have a chess club, here comes some Chicanos that want to have one, too. What is wrong with reacting instead of acting is that for example a Chicano fraternity would never solve anything for the people and would turn into another "social club in drab disguise" o' una continua parranda that would be off limits to the OUT set. The gavacho university is no place to find temporary refuge,on the contrary its a place to get the hell out of in one piece. While there out of necessity one should change it,alter it,influence it,pressure it and tighten its neck un til it sees the reality of the Chicano. Many moe aware and unbought chicanos are realizing each day that Anglo education does not stem from love of man, love of knowledge ore ven shaped by the natural curiosity of the instructor. Anglo eduaction is shaped by the White House, the governor in each state, IBM, GM, NBC, ABC, CBS, Walt Disney and Hollywood, and not necessarily in that order. Since universities ail ( its funny how each time a barrio is grounded the politicos swear that this time this or that new university is going to benefit La Raza and it hardly ever does. I wonder why. I know why they say that 'cause we KNOW its not.) to reach the barrio it should be the duty (and IT IS) of those Chicano students there to bring the Barrio to the conciesness of the gavachito universities. Everything this system is doing to us should be discussed int he open. maybe then everyone will study the rightthings. Otherwise it is very hard to convince all gavachos (from students to staff and workers) that the world of the barrio is not the shit hole they think it is. It is not that uniform or conformist or submissive as all the social researchers (reactionaries all) think it is. In el barrio se habla espanol without the permission of the Spanish Department. Chicano student should not let themselves be pushed around by the administrators or get alienated,by college life. Estudiantes Chicanos tenemos que resistir Hasta La Victoria Siempre! 1 [emblem]
