3 [2 photos] Miembros del Teatro de Zapata participaron en el desfile Del 16 de Septiembre, Chicago. Teatro de La Raza, El Original. "EL ESPEJO DEL PUEBLO" EL TEATRO DE ZAPATA In the past El Teatro Chicano has proved to an effective tool in creating an awareness of the Chicano Movement. it has served as a method of expressing the struggles and victories of La RAZA. El Teatro Chicano presents actos that deal with problems that Chicanos face in the educational institutions, Police brutality, assimilation, discrimination, and other forms of oppression. Chicano Teatro attempts to vreate, on stage, a mirror for La Raza, so that Chicanos can re-examine themselves and their environment. The fact exists that many Chicanos in the States and specifically the Mid-west have been raped of their Indo-Hispano heritage, some more than others. This cultural genocide has been caused by the Media and "educational" institutions that are biased and narrow minded. The Chicano, sometimes called a Mexican-American, has always been depicted as a dirty lazy, bandido, sleeping under a cactus; a greasy, ignorant, dumb campesino; a rotten pachuco who always carries a switchblade or other negative image. The misrepresentation, and false image that the Media presents has caused many of our people to feel ashamed and inferior to Anglos. Many little Chicanitos have suffered mentally from alienation and lack of identity. The Chicano students at the university of Iowa, being aware of the problems and injustices faced by la Raza have organized a Chicano Teatro. "El Teatro Zapatista". The teatro has been effective in the past three years and hopes to be even more effective. With El Teatro, the Chicano students will stress the importance of the Chicano Movement and t he building of a Cultural, Historical and Political base for Chicanos. It will attempt to create a new and positive image and a new direction for Chicanos in Iowa and the midwest, keeping in mind that the purpose of Chicano Teatro is to serve as a tool for liberation from the oppression of Anglo Institutions and cultural genocide. EL TEATRO ZAPATISTA EN DAVENPORT *** El Teatro Zapatista, formerly known as El Teatro de Zapata, is back in action this year. It's first performance was held at the opening of the Ruben Salazar Center located in Davenport, Iowa on Saturday September 29, 1973. The new members of El Teatro Zapatista got their first opportunity in performing for la Raza and proved to be very effective. The response from the audience was very positive. El Teatro hopes to travel all over Iowa and perform Actos para la gente. El Teatro is willing to perform any where that there is Raza in Iowa or in the Midwest. El Teatro Zapatista is not only to help educate Chicanos, but also the larger ignorant Anglo society. for further information contact: El Teatro Zapatista 115 N.
