5 CHICANO LAW STUDENTS The Chicano Law Students at the University of Iowa have organized. The College of Law now has seven Chicano Law Students enrolled during the 1971-72 school year. As the students population rose, students decided to organize as Chicano Association for Legal Education (CHALE) to meet the unique needs of the Chicanos in law school. Plans for CHALE include recruitment of new students for next year, an information center on Chicano legal rights, a speakers program to bring Chicano lawyers working on Raza projects to Iowa City, and an employment program for Chicano Students. Temporary officers of the new organization include: Steve Rocha, President: Arturo Ramirez, Secretary-Treasurer. As a part of the recruitment program the officers request that all Chicanos, regardless of age or sex, interested in a legal career, write to Arturo Ramirez, College of Law, University of Iowa, Iowa city, Iowa 52242. *** OFFICE OF STUDENT MINORITY AIDE Chicano and Indian Students at the University of Iowa often have individual problems with the University of Iowa. The Office of Student Minority Aide has been established to assist Chicanos, Indians, and Blacks with any problems involving unfair and discriminatory treatment or practices by the University and its employees. In the past students have able only to complain about problems such as unfair grading by professors. Steve Rocha has begun work this month with the Office at Room 207, Old Dental Building. He is working part/time at the Office from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Office phone - 353-6801. [emblem] TEACHER CORPS Teacher Corps at the University of Iowa is currently seeking interested applicants for the fall semester of 1974. The 15 month intership (Jr.-Sr. year) will consist of practical, experiential training in Muscatine, Davenport, West Liberty, and Columbus Junction. This will certify the student in elementary education. The emphasis throughout the program will be on preparing the student to teach the Chicano Child as well as other elementary school children. Involved in the program thus far are the 1 local school districts, Chicano parents and community representatives, the State Department of Public Instruction, the Muscatine-Scott County School System, and University of Iowa personnel.
