6 GENARO VASQUEZ PRE-SCHOOL *** The Genaro Vasquez Pre-School is now beginning the 3rd year of existance. The purpose of the Pre-School is to give Chicano children an opportunity to live and learn and develop their skill, creativity, in a atmosphere that they can relate to. This can only be achieved if their uniqueness is recognized and their culture valued. Enrollment is always open to the Chicano children. There is no fee and the parents do not have to incur any expenses. Activities include learning Folklore Mexicano, Chicano songs, rhymes, games and fiestas to celebrate special occasions como navidad, y la primavera. The volunteer staff includes the students esposas y padres de los ninos. Tambien, La Raza. Encargadas; Donna Olvera, Paula Camps, Rosa Higareda [photo] JIRKA SCHOOL PRIORIADADES? ******** As Chicanos, we are re-evaluating what we do. We have to, because we are dynamic, constantly moving. There are two questions that we as Chicano students must ask ourselves. First, what skill am I obtaining here at the University? Second, can I speak Easpanol well enough to use this skill por la Raza? First: What skill? This is a important question. There are three areas where we need trained Chicanos. In the Medical area and health related fields; in Law and Business and in Education. lately, education has been the area of concentration for many of our students. We must not forget the other fields. In talking to Chicanos here on campus about the health, law and business fields, some of the replies have been "Oh! I hate science" or "Oh! Business! I hate math". In our lives we must do things that we do not necessarily like. We are not here at college for a vacation. We are here for a purpose. Mainly, to gain those skills la Raza needs. It is up to us to make the sacrifice in acquiring those skills. Second: Can I speak Espanol? In Aztlan this may not be relevant question, but here in the Midwest it is. part of learning about our culture is learning how to speak Espanol. Some of us are Bilingual others understand Espanol but are not fluent enough, while others are lost. If we are ever going to use the skills that we learn here at the university to help our Raza we had better be Bilingual and Bicultural. In conclusion, acquiring those technical skills and the ability to communicate with all our people is our responsability; es nuestra responsabilidad comuni carnos con toda nuestra Raza. lest not forget.
