8 GENARO VASQUEZ PRE-SCHOOL This year's preschool program will be held at the Centro in West Liberty, 319 N. Calhoun. On Saturday, October 5, the preschool program got off the ground successfully. This was made possible with the aid of the Teacher Corps Interns who are stationed in the West Liberty area. Not only have they provided a place for instruction, they have also provided ideas and manpower necessary for running the program. This is very much appreciated by the West Liberty community and the University of Iowa students who work out of the CIACC. Sixty-two Chicanitos attended the first preschool gathering. Two films were provided and a pinata with plenty of candy, which was later broken. The objectives of the preschool program are to hopefully be successfull in teaching the Chicanitos to speak and understand the English language. The program will be runr long the lines of a bilingual, bicultural educational philosophy. The Vazquez Pre-School Program, in order to function effectively, needs contributions. Contributions such as bilingual and bicultural material. We also need more Chicano student volunteers to teach in the program on Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m. The program also needs financial contributions if at all possible. The funds are important to purchase much of the material and equipment necessary for the program. For more information, contact: Eddie Ildefonso at (319) 351-4202 or the CIACC, 308 Melrose Ave., Iowa City, Iowa, 52242, phone number (319) 3534753 or 353-6014. e. Ildefonso. Teacher Corps En Iowa The Teacher Corps program at the University of Iowa has been going on now since early this past summer. Nineteen interns are currently making school life a little more fun for the Chicanitos in Columbus Junction, Davenport, Muscatine and West Liberty. [Photo caption] SANDI RIVERA, INTERN AT WEST LIBERTY WITH SOME CHICANITOS Teacher Corps, for some of you dudes that don't know, is the result of action taken by the Dept. of HEW to assist bilingual or bicultural children in their regular classroom studies. Besides helping the little chavitos in the classroom, the interns also work in the communities, y nosotros sabemos que es lo que pasa. En West Liberty the interns have started a community cultural center for todos los Chicanos to get it on together. The interns there also help the students from the CIACC with their pre-school program on Saturdays. The people in teacher corps represent many states--Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Colorado, Califas y Tejas. The interns son: Jose Reynaga, Sandi Rivera, Anna Torres, Arturo Villalobos y Frank Villarrial en West Liberty: David Chavira, John Clark, Carlos Sanchez, Eva Martinez y Elizabeth en Davenport: Elizabeth Lutz, Virginia Alvarado y Roberto Caraveo en Columbus Junction; Edmundo Cavazos, Mar(k?)
