From Chicago will come Louisa Ano Nuevo Kerr (Loyola Univ.), and Alfredo de los Reyes (CASA). From Iowa, we will have Jorge Garcia; Miguel Teran (Govenor's Spanish Speaking Task Force); Juan Cadena, Muscatine Migrant Committee; and Martha Guitierrez, Davenport Public Schools, and formerly with the Migrant Action Program (Mason City). 

We're planning a dance, but no band has been located yet, as well as performances by the Teatro Zapatistas, West Liberty Dance Troupe, and Bailadores Zapatistas. Larry Luna (Miguelito) is also scheduled to perform.

The easy part is over. We were notified that we've reveived funds from the Iowa Humanities Board. Now we have to get to work. We will set up about seven committees to deal with: 1) publicity 2) registration 3) housing 4) transportation 5) security 6) audiovisual and 7) evaluation. We will be meeting on a regular basis, and everyone will be expected to do his or her part. This is OUR conference, and only through cooperation and hard work will we be able to pull it off successfully.

Pues I guess we better get started. Notices will be placed at the center to inform you of the first meeting scheduled for conference plannning. So let's get moving and show the country that el movimiento is alive and well in Iowa City. SI SE PUEDE.

ESCUELA PRE-ESCOLAR GENARO VASQUEZ

Pre-school is expanding in Iowa City. new supplies as well as a more organized program are the best news that pre-school has had for quite a while. The pre-school meets every Saturday from noon until 2 p.m. at "El Centro Unidad" in West Liberty. Students from here at the Center in Iowa City as well as Teacher Corps interns meet with chavalitos of all ages to help them with numbers, reading and other skills which they may need assistance in. It also gives them an opportunity to develop these skills in their own culture and language .

Some of the new materials which the pre-school has received include bilingual books, games for the pre-school aged children to help them learn their ABC's in both English and Spanish, [[underline]]plus[[end underline]] a new tape recorder. Plans are also being made to obtain some puppets and a puppet stage. Besides supplies which will help the chicanitos, new cabinets and shelves for the volunteers will soon be taken to the "Centro". Eddie Ildefonso, head of the pre-school program now has an office at the Chicano Indian American Center in Iowa City. He is presently moving into his office and attempting to arrange the supplies as well as an actual instruction program in a more structured manner. Eddie appreciates, of course any help in moving in as well as any volunteers that show up at the Center on Saturday mornings.
