CHORT CHORTS ciasu news - In spite of three rather wild social gatherings, the House at 308 Melrose Ave is still intact. These include the installation of venetian blinds and an air conditioner in the Jose Olvera Ballroom. It is relatively quiet. - Roberto and Rosie Negrete have left us to go back to Califas. He is giong back to school to get his masters. We miss them. Roberto's job will probably be filled in August. - Becky and Francisco Costilla are responsible for making this a better world by adding one more brown soul to humanity. A girl: Leandra. All are doing well. - Lo and behold! The new Director of Special Support Services has finally been appointed. Mae Colleen (Thompson) Jones - a graduate from UI. She attended school here through the SSS program. Bienvenida! We look forward to working closely with her and wish her much success in her new career. - According to CHALE (Chicano Association for Legal Education) there will be seven more Chicanos at the Law School this fall. A lot of the credit goes to Arturo Ramirez who went to Tejas to recruit and to Steve Rocha who made many phone calls to potential students. Steve graduadted as did Jorge Gomez. Jorge and Kathy are in Brownsville, Tejas were he is lawyering for a legal aid-type office. - If you see any group of Brown and Red people acting like wild persons they are probably Chindians - Chicanos and Indians who are really getting their shit together. A new tribe perhaps? - In the Zavala-Rodriguez tradition we are awarding on-half of a Brown Buffalo Chip to Diana Gutierrez who failed to show up at her surprize going-away party. Diana went to Tejas for a while. - The Genaro Vasquez BiLingual School received a $3,328 grant from the National Committee on Self Development of People. With this grant the school has been able to purchase audio-visual equipment, shelving units, tables and chairs, among other things....The Centro Unido has been renovated. We now have new carpeting, lights, and freshly painted walls....This summer we have been able to have a course sponsored by the Language Media Laboratory - students attending received credit....We have taken the children on field trips including horseback riding, swimming and to Lake McBride....The summer session at La Escuelita has been documented on film and slides...so that when La Raza returns to Iowa City this fall, you will be able to see the things that have been going on. Most of the photography was done by the children........On the 26th of July the West Liberty Community will be sponsoring a dance for the Teacher Corps Interns who have helped in the work that has been done in West Liberty and elsewhere. On that same day La Escuelita will have a cook-out for all of the parents and children of the school. - Congradulations to Nufie and Sylvia Ramirez. Big wedding took place in Houston. - Rusty Barcelo is back! This time as an Academic Advisor for S.S.S. (part-time, but very effective) - As usual some rotten muthers have been ripping off the contents of Jose's refrigerator. Jose's comment: "May a perverted camel crap in their tacos." - - - 5
