Many of the students attending the University of Iowa came to the campus as a result of being able to identify "a position" which they felt could respond to their needs. A change in title such as the one being suggested will eliminate the opportunity for attracting potential Chicano and Native American applicants. Furthermore, community organizations will have difficulty referring students and/or obtaining admission information with the omission of the current title. 3. The proposed title of Academic Development Specialist also implies that the functions of the position will broaden. We are concerned especially since it is already difficult for Ray Leal and past individuals who served in his capacity to meet the demands of the position. In addition, because his time is spread so thin, students often have a difficult time meeting with him. To broaden the responsibilities would only compound problems. 4. The likelyhood of an individual applying for the position based on the proposed title who would view the primary responsibility as addressing Chicano and Native American needs is remote. The proposed title would attract an individual whose primary orientation would be "Academic" and not student services. Ms. Jones indicated she would search for an individual with an academic background with proper credentials--Phd. highly desirable. Obviously, such action limits the field of potential applicants who are Chicano and Native Americans and who might otherwise be capable of performing duties and functions of the position. Reaction to Supervision of the Chicano-Native American Cultural Center 1. By placing the Cultural Center under the supervision of the Minority Program Consultant, the Cultural Center will lose its autonomy and its entire existance will be threatened. The Special Support Services Annual Report of 1972-73 stipulates that the Executive Academic Director (which we identified as the position currently referred to as Assistant [arrow pointing to right] 9
