-13- silko y HUERTA The other night I went to a poetry and fiction reading given by Leslie Silko, a Native American and a writer. She gave her reading in the physics auditorium. Almost every seat was taken. It was good to see so many anglo faces there. They needed to hear what Leslie had to say: the old stories; the wisdom of the Indian; the mysticism that shadows the land and the people; the life of a poor person in the Southwest can be shitty. There were seven or eight Chicanos at the reading. Maybe life in the Midwest teaches Chicanos all what Leslie writes about. Maybe that's why only a few bothered to go. Were those Chicanos there, the ignorant ones who needed an education that night, like anglos in the audience? I'm glad the majority of Chicanos on campus need so little of Leslie's wisdom. They must be very smart. Delores Huerta, Vice President of the United Farm Workers, gave a speech in the ballroom on March ninth. Again the sight of so many anglos was pleasing. They're trying it seems. They were the vast majority there. I guess the Chicanos on campus are so in tune to the problems of their people that they can remain at home or in the library and contemplate TV or read sociological tracts. Ricardo Longoria [emblem]
