[emblem] THE IOWA PRISON CONNECTION (Editor's note: The follow was recently received from the American Indian/Chicano Cultural Center (AICCC) at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. You will recall that in September riots erupted in the prison and consequently the entire inmate population was broken into 100-man units as "security measure." The IACCC, along with other prison Self Help groups, was temporarily suspended...) Greetings: This is to inform you that the American Indian/Chicano Cultural Center is presently attempting to function on a normal basis once again; and that due to the present schedule of the Institution, we have been unable to meet on a regular basis. However, it is hoped that we will return to the regular format. We thank you for your concern in this matter, and for you support in the future. And we certainly thank you for all the support that you have given us in the past. We need your never ending support and solidarity.... Sincerely yours, Louis Cunha, Secretary James Pepples, Chairman [?} Galvan, Treasurer LIST OF PROPOSALS We respectfully ask that the proposals be sanctioned by the Institution; and for the reasons mentioned herein... The AICCC requests that it be permitted to meet with all its members on monthly meetings in order to function as a group and as a whole, and that for the group to be a viable function, it is necessary that its members be allowed to attend meetings. The AICCC requests that whereas there are but a few members that cell in the different schedule of cell-houses; that if the member so desires, that he be allowed to change cell-houses for the purpose of being able to meet with all the other members. This we feel is a possible solution to the present problem brought about by the current schedule. The AICCC requests that its members be allowed to have additional time for monthly meetings because of the long distance outside guests have to travel to get here. The AICCC requests that it be allowed to have a room for our weekly meetings and to conduct the necessary business with the officers of the group. We request the old J.C. Office which is located in the auditorium, or, the room next to the library where our property is now being stored. We further request that the pass system be used to enable members to meet on weekdays and that Mr. Galloway, our sponsor, be present for supervision. [arrow going to right] 10
