MARCH 7-8, 1980 *CAMPUS VISITATION* Philips Hall Auditorium The Chicano/Indian American Student Union and Cultural Center will sponsor the Second Annual Chicano/Indian American On-campus Visitation Days. The High schools participating will be primarily from southeastern Iowa and will include Davenport Central, Davenport West, Burlington Notre Dame High, Musactine High, Ft. Madison High, Iowa City West, Iowa City High, West Liberty High, South Tama High, and Cedar Rapids high schools. In addition, we are extending invitation to Muscatine Community College and Southeastern Iowa Community College in Burlington, as these colleges do have a Chicano enrollment would be potential transger students to The University of Iowa. We The Chicano/Indian American Student union and Cultural Center propose that the Chicano/Indian American On-Campus Visitation Days will accomplish the following objectives: - To expose Chicano/Indian American students to the University of Iowa campus. - To encourage Chicano/Indian American students to finish high school and to attend some type of postsecondary institution after high school graduation. - To provide academic and supportive counseling to high school under classmen so that they will become aware of and start taking the necessary courses to enter The University of Iowa. -To make Chicano/Indian American students aware of financial aid programs available to them and to assure these students that it is financially possible for them to attend The University of Iowa. - To aid prospective students in filling out their financial aid and admission forms. - To provide positive role models (Chicano/Indian American students) as examples of students who are having success in attending The University of Iowa. - To expose community people and agencies to Chicano/Indian American programs on campus and to seek their support in the recruitment of Chicano/Indian American students. - To encourage The parents of high school students to attend the visitation day so that they may better understand what financial and academic opportunities are available and to see that it is possible for their sons and daughters to attend The University of Iowa. Often times parents of Chicano/Indian American students fear letting their children attend college because of the lack of knowledge of financial assistance available to help curb the high cost of education, or they have preconceived stereotypes about the University of Iowa environment. The Chicano/Indian American Student Union and Cultural Center view this visitation day as a successful learning experience for students, parents, community members and high school personnel./ We also view it as acomplementing the current University of Iowa recruitment effort. In order to make this event a success, participation from present students will be necessary. If you are interested in helping to increase the enrollment of Chicano and Indian students at the U of I, contact Sheila Vedder of Special Support Services at 353-7170 or Celina Espinoza at 354-4603 ******************************************** March 8&9, 1980 - MINORITY PRE-LAW CONFERENCE- For the past two years the University of Iowa College of Law has co-sponsored a Minority Pre-Law Conference designed to help minority students gain admissions into Law School.
