6 2 February 1978 [handwriting]TO:[end handwriting] Student Senate Office of Student Activities Iowa Memorial Union [handwriting]FROM: DARLENE WIND - CHAIRPERSON CIASU Dear Senators: We are present today at this meeting of the University of Iowa Student Senate as representatives of the Chicano-Indian American Student Union and the Black Student Union. We have come to show our concern over the fate of the Minority Seat of the Student Senate. Collectively we are of the opinion that the Minority Seat on the Student Senate is an important asset for those of us who are under-represented in the decision-making process of this university, and though we are aware of the problems we have experienced in learning to use this asset wisely, we are advocating that minority representation on the Student Senate be continued. In its creation, the Minority Seat of the Student Senate symbolized the Senate's recognition of the need for equal representation for all persons governed in a democracy, and exemplified the Senate's willingness to take positive action toward guaranteeing that equal representation become a reality. We deeply regret that minority representation on the Student Senate has been minimal, and we are taking action now to assure proper representation of the Chicano-Indian American Student Union and Black Student Union in the Senate, by electing a senator to fill the minority Seat in the forthcoming term. We ask for your aid and indulgence in the redress of this situation. In an age when minority struggles are no longer popular, and when social gains of the 1960's are now slipping backward, we are looking to the Student Senate to act as a model to the rest of the University Community in lending continued support for minority programs. The intent of past senates to end social injustices must not be forgotten. To us, the Minority Seat represents the Senate's commitment to equal opportunity for representation and participation of all University of Iowa students, regardless of race or color, and we are confident that this commitment is genuine. Sincerely, [actual signature] Darlene Wind for Chicano-Indian American Student Union, Black Student Union
