Background Information When Corte first entered Tenochtitian (Mexico City today), he was greeted by Moctezuma, emperor of the Aztecs, Little by little, Corte managed to strip Moctezuma of his power and gain some control of Tenochitian. Cortez went so far as to leave the city with a small group of his men to mind his affairs there. Upon his return, the Aztecs were beginning to understand that the Spaniards were mortal and that they did not have their best interests at heart. This allowed them to mobilize against the Spaniards. Cuauhtemoc took up the cause to defend the Aztec people in defense against the Spaniards.
