TOLTEC STATUES- Page 8 Themes The Indians of ancient Mexico left a valuable architectural legacy to the present day peoples. The toltecs possessed many advanced methods in building. Background Information These are Toltec monoliths found in Tula, Mexico. They were built by great builders and carvers in stone. The statutes are very old, big and heavy. The statues have carved details that displayed the dress of that era. The symbol on the chest is a breastplate representing a butterfly. The sandals and headdress are stylized, yet they let us known how the Indian of that time dressed. There were a great number of these statues that were carved; they were used as structural supports for the temple at Tula. Only a few survived.
