EL CAMPESINO- Page 22 Themes The work of the farmworker is strenuous and important. Many New Mexicans rely on farm work as a way of making a living. The land yields food if one works and takes care of it. Background Information. Many New Mexican Chicanos are either farmworkers or have gardens in the back yard. The life of the farmworker is a difficult one with strenuous work and little pay. Note that in the picture the man is hunched over; he works many hours in this fashion. Women and children also do the hard farm work. The scene is typically Southwestern: the hot sun and lack of dense vegetation. Many of the children will be familiar with it. See "El Maiz" page 5 for further information.
