This was a bitter blow to its supporters for they had counted on the support of the Philly Conference. Among the objections which helped defeat the resolution were “book-burning,” “it might possibly have an ill-effect on all science fiction,” and “the postal authorities probably wouldn’t do anything about it anyway.” A brief intermission followed. Several items had been donated to the PSFS for auction by Mary Gnaedinger, L. Sprauge de Camp, Oswald Train, and Jim Williams, so a small auction was held to defray the expenses of the conference. Sam Moskowitz capably handled the auctioneering. Most sought-after item was the cover-painting in oils by Edd Cartier for “Lest Darkness Fall” which de Camp had donated. This brought a winning bid of $29.00. Lawrence and Finlay originals not yet seen in print also brought good prices under Sam’s salesmanship. Alfred Prime, of the PSFS, was the heavy bidder of the session. After the auction the meeting was adjourned, most of the crowd going to dinner at a nearby cafeteria before it broke up. Those who could stay longer formed two groups, one going to the home of book-dealer Jim Williams for most of the evening, the other visiting the PSFS club room to show it to the Queens group and some of the ESFA members and later joining the crowd at Williams’ home. The PHILADELPHIA RECORD of 28 October carried an article about the affair, Smith, and Isaac Asimov on page three. ___________________________ Support the ’47 philcon—join now ____________________________ AGONY COLUMN Last week editorial miscalculation placed the Tigrina-Ackerman-Evans trip to Tarzana as 13 Oct. It was made on 20 Oct. STEFNEWS will not be published next week. My mail-box is starving for news, and I will be finishing up my trip with a stop-off in Chicago for the Centracon.
