May 24 1940 SUN SPOTS Page 3. ______________________________ ****************************************** ASTRA - FICTION. ______________________________ by G. de la Ree Jr. This column is smaller than usual because of the lack of astronomical data.. REVIEWS OF PRO-MAGS: Reports on STARTLING STORIES. COVER**********EXCELLENT. STORIES*************GOOD. INTERIOR DRAWINGS**GOOD. SPECIAL FEATURES**EXCELLENT. This m onth’s read the novel, “FIVE STEPS TO TOMORROW”, is written by Eando Binder, but in my estimation it is far below his usual standard. The plot,of course, closely follows THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO by Dumas. If you have never read the latter, you will enjoy FIVE STEPS TO TOMORROW,inasmuch as it is well written;but if you have I don’t believe that you will like it very much . Like the “PRISONER OF MARS”, which was printed in one of last year’s STARTLING STORIES, and which closely follows the PRIDONER Of Zenda, Binder’s story lacks originality. Reports on CAPITAN FUTURE.. COVER*******************GOOD. STORIES******************GOOD. INTERIOR DRAWINGS**GOOD. SPECIAL FEATURES*****EXCELLENT. Capitan Future is once again shooting aroun d this Solar System, with his three unhuman companion s, GRAG, OTHO,and SIMON WRIGHT.He is, of course, now a definite type,as are all of Hamilton’s characters. Like the Three Planeteers,Captain Future is a mental genius. He is always inventing something or other just in the nick of time. But for all C.F’s faults,he is still an interesting character, and well worth reading. The departments of mag, include The Worlds of Tomorrow and The Futuremen, and are excellent reading. See you next issue…In print. ----------------------------------------------- THE TRASH BASKET! ____________________________ by nobody in particular. FLASH!
