May 24, 1940 SUN SPOTS Page 4. _____________________________ ***************************************** SECOND MEETING OF THE N.S.F.L. _____________________________ By C. de la Ree Jr. On the night of Thursday, May 16 1940, Roderick Gaetz and myself accompanied by Rod’s father stepped from his house into the pelting rain. Yes we were off to Newark!! We ran or rather raced each other to the garage and hopped into Mr. Gaetz’s Mercury and in no time we were speeding down Bogert Place towards the great business center of Westwood. We passed it and continued on till reached Harold Mutch’s house. Here we tarried a few minutes, long enough to find he had not eaten and thus could not accompany us on our trip. Once again we were off. We drove through miniature lakes and were nearly forced to get out and swim. When we arrived in Newark we drove up Clinton Ave, or was it the Passaic River? Well at long last we drove up in front of the Bergan Street school. While Mr. Gaetz left for the nearest Movie House we swam up to the side door and entered the school. Finding the hall dark we groped our way along till we found the clubroom. It also being dark we returned to the hall. After endless seconds in this terrible state we found the gym. which was alive with activity. Here, also alone we found Allen Moss. Together the three of us waited for our Leader-Dictator, Moskowitz. Some 15 minutes later the aforesaid Mr. Moskowitz arrived on the scene accompanied by Ray Van Houten. Sam suggested that we retire to the club-room and needless to say, we did. As soon as we were seated Van Houten practically threw copies of his long awaited fan mag Tasarac. (We hope we spelled it right!) under our noses. This mag, which is yearly, has been three years in the making is half mimioed and the other half is printed. We asked how much. He said 25¢ and promptly received al[?] copies back. All fooling aside its a good mag. Anyway at about 7:30 the meeting was called to order. Shortly before this John Victor Peterson had arrived on the scene bringing the attendance to six. The minutes were read by Allen Moss in the absence of our trusty(we hope) treasurer and Secy. Dick Crain. After this all members coughed up their 10¢ dues, which was soon followed by 20¢ for the fan Mag “Stardust”. After discussing matters which I am not able to print here our worthy author John Victor Peterson was called upon for a short talk. His speech was very interesting and dwelt on the subject of dreams and reality, plus some facts on Astounding Stories. After the applause had died down Ray Van Houten read an enlightening article on the fourth dimension entitled “A headache In The Fourth Dimension”. After hearing this I knew no more than when he started. Oh well I guess I’m just plain dumb? At about 8:30 Bob Studley of N.Y.C. wandered in a little late, (1 ½ hours to be exact), but then all that matters is he made it at all. Next a rating of last months issue of “FANTASTIC ADVENTURES” was given. I do not have the averages, for Allen Moss was still figuring them out when the meeting broke up at 9:00. We arrived home in Westwood at about 10:00 rather wet, but very well satisfied ************************** The first issue of the club’s organ SCIENTIFICTION SCOUT, was not complete at the time of the meeting. It will be done in the near future. Allen Moss is official editor.
