Page 14 BIZARRE A Brief Autobiography by Hannes Bok A fine artist tells all My life's been pretty uneventful. Main event in life: at the age of twelve was given copy of Amazing containing third installment of Merritt's classic yarn, "The Moon Pool." The illustration by Frank R. Paul made me decide to be an artist. Don't know why, except that I liked it. And I believed the "Moon Pool" tale! It seemed to be true, and then, at the age of twelve, I was legitimately a moron (there are those who'll argue I still am) and apt to believe seeming truths, and it gave me a complex: ever since, like Larry O'Keefe, I've believed in fairies and leprechauns. But I've never had any actual conversation with 'em. Merritt encouraged me to read fantasy, and I almost wish he hadn't, since it led to family fights about my perusing cheap trash, and to my eventual emigration from home sweet home to the wilds of Seattle. Since then I've hitch-hiked, been on the bum, had odd jobs, and was just about to be out in the cold again when Ray Bradbury (attending the '39 S-F convention), peace to him, got me a job with Weird Tales. I became a close friend of Editor Farnsworth Wright and his family, and for eight months all was peaches and cream. Then Wright left Weird, the magazine went bi-monthly, and I didn't get enough work to keep me going any too well. I've been in Vermont, but immediately orders came in from Gnaedinger, Pohl, and McIlwraith, and I've returned to New York, where I will try again, this time with better results, I hope. My theory about creative art is that pay doesn't count so much as turning out good work. I wish one could do the latter and still get paid well for it. Seems funny the relatively bad stuff pays best! I'm of average height, but when nature fashioned me, she did it on a lavish scale. I'm nuts on symphonic music, sweets, scenery, and swimming. I like to do color and halftone work. So much for Bok. Watch for these autobiographies Notes on a Non-entity..Lovecraft Exploration: The Third Planet..Williamson A Fictional Autobiography..Keller Also Tanner, Rocklynne, and others
