January 1941 Page 15 Imagine-Movies By Forrest J Ackerman A Column About Fantasy Films... DEATH TAKES NO HOLIDAY Continuing its current cycle of scientifilms, Columbia will be offering, about the time you read these words, that 'Man they could not hang,' that 'Man with 9 lives'-- Karloff-- as The Wizard of Death. BEYOND THE VEIL And upon completion of the aforementioned 'B,' Columbia is scheduled to picturing baroque book Edge of Running Water as a big budget or 'A' Karloffantasy. A scientist, seeking to establish communication with the departed spirits of the dead, in collaboration with a spiritualist strives to construct a "mediumachine," breaks thru into the 4th dimension! The firstime, to my knowledge, the 4th dimension (whatever it may consist of in the picture) will be treated on the screen. Climax (of the book) comes with the laboratorician's being blown into the unknown plane. I don't like to insert myself into this, but--I just hope the picture doesn't wind up with one of those irritating antiscience speeches--"He meddled with things men should leave alone"-- as they do 8 balls out of 9. Which was one reason I was particularly please with--& recommend you see, if you haven't yet--the recent Man with 9 lives: It champions science. THORNE SMITH'S FIFTH It's Topper Returns, to be made with funtasy apRoach. Roach also to make a movie titled the Unholy Horde; whether fantasy or not, unknown. WRINKLED That's The Mummy's Hand, dealing with the death-curse of the ancient Egyptian gods, which has been completed by Universal. SUPERMAN KILLED The deal is dead on Republic's proposed Superman serial, due to war conditions, it's said. But Burroughs' book Jungle Girl is skeded for production by same studio. WITCH SHALL IT BE Gable's next. Witch of the Wilderness. "CYCLOPS" COPS MONKEY-SUIT MOVIE ASSIGNMENT Albert Dekker is to do the Avenging Brain, scenario of a man-ape, for Paramount. Last Man in the World is another title tied up for him, following his Cyclopean success. Attn Paramount Colossal Idea Dept.: How about Dekker in Farley's time travel The Man Who Met Himself? T'would require him to play a dual role: A double Dekker! "THE BROWN (EM)BOMBER" Weird tale fans will be seeing fisticuff fans' idol How Louis in a terror tale if there is no final blackout & they get the black out to the studio. Title: Sign of the Zombies. ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS After reportedly having sunk a million dollars in its proposed Merian "King Ron" Cooper fantasy spectacle, variously known as War Eagles & White Eagle, MGM has called the whole thing off because they couldn't get their winged women to fly right!
