Chugchug, like Eve, Takes the Rap It was not until July 19 that my Filipino friend, Hernandez Chugchug, returned on his motorcycle from Stockton. I must confess that I gave him no very pleasant welcome. 'Why on earth,' I asked him, 'did you stay so long? If you had let me know where to find you it would have been different. As it is, LITTLE WIT is going to be a month late, all on account of you.' 'I not realize I so important here, also very busy in Stockton. So many my countryman there, and so need to be organized.' 'And what, may I ask, are you organizing for?' 'Cannery Ag--thought I tell you last time. My people so like organizing, they organize too many union. Three, four, maybe five where one be great plenty.' 'But, Chugchug, is yours the right one? Col. Garrison may not think so, nor any of the Record's five columnists.' 'Col. Garrison not my boss, and is not Record on my side? is not word goon on Record blacklist? They know what it mean, I thinking.' 'And what does it mean, in your Pacific lingo?' 'Goon is business agent who collect dues from worker. Unlike racketeer, who collect dues from boss.' 'That reminds me. What do you think of Wendell Willkie as a candidate for president?' 'Republican make mistake if think yellow dog can beat Roosevelt.' 'But remember, Hernandez, you prophesied that Roosevelt wouldn't run. You said Wallace would run for president.' 'I lucky to be so near right. And Wallace be president anyhow, soon as Roosevelt die.' 'Absit omen! Say, I wonder what all that pounding is across the street.' Here I opened the front door and peered out. 'Ah, it's the neighbors' children. They're up on the roof of an old shed, pounding with what looks like a mattock.' 'No,' observed Chugchug, 'not mattock, but have blade parallel with handle. More like halberd I see in Stockton museum.' 'You're right, and I think they've managed to chop thru a good many shingles already. But you ought to have been here last Tuesday, when the gang bathed in the irrigation ditch, the leader wearing her all-perfect, heavenly dress--if you know what I mean.' 'Yes, I study angelology long time ago.' LITTLE WIT August 1940 5
