November, 1940. SUN SPOTS Page 9. ANNUAL INSPECTION, (Con'd) Everything was set--the plan for the tak-off had been rearranged somewhat. Instead of a stuff shirted admiral pushing the button, the President himself was going to do it. The button that started things I mean. The take-off was due to be made at 3:04 p.m., solar time, and it was now three o'clock. President Cummings had taken his place on the starters stand, and was now watching, timepiece in hand, for the time to come. The crowd around the space-port was expectantly silent. Like they were waiting for something dreadful to happen. The President was plainly nervous; a new man in office, this was his first function as a Space Journey Starter, and you could see he wanted everything to be perfect. It lacked one minute of starting time, and the ships were lying about a quarter of a mile from the startersstand, when it hit me. I passed out! When I came to, the president was furiously pushing the button that should have shot fifty ships into outer space, but nothing was happening. The ships were setting there just as they had been before I pulled my fade away. "Shorty", Mike bellered. I looked up and Mike was standing over me with murder in his eye. I shrunk to about the size of a microbe. "What the hell is wrong out there?" Mike asked. "Mike", I gasped, "I forgot to put the fuel in the motor blocks!" THE END CIVAL WAR REFOUGHT AT SOLAROID CLUB MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 29 TH. On Sunday, the 29th of September, six members of the Solaroids, Manly Wade Wellman, Roderick Gaetz, Gerry de la Ree, Jr., James Breckenridge, Harold Mutch, and Charles (CAB) Beling, gathered together at the home of Roderick Gaetz for the usual bi-weekly meeting. Harold Mutch, Jr., chairman, called the meeting to order at about 4:05 p.m. The minutes were read and accepted, and the treasurers report was .48¢ with all magazines except TWS bought. The new book rack containing all club mags. and books, was praised by all. A motion to have a President or director rather than a chairman was unanimously defeated, and a new order of chairmen was selected. Suggestions for SSp were given, and the topic of new members was discussed at long length. After this Pepsi-Cola was devoured by all thoes present, and between gulps thanks were handed to Mr. Wellman who donated it. About this time something about the Cival War was mentioned, and the result was instantanious. Mr. Wellman, a strong southerner, and James Breckenridge and Charles Beling two men of the north, began, what was soon to turn into a lengthly discussion. de la Ree, Mutch and Gaetz, not being especially intrested, since the war was seemingly over 80 years ago, left the room. After a half an hour of discussion, whereupon they were no better off than when they started, the three orators brought the meeting to an end, since the chairman, as they soon found was outside playing football with the Secretary and treasurer!
