December, 1940. SUN SPOTS Page 17. EDITORIAL #3, "[[underline]]Just a mess![[end underline]]" By Gerry de la Ree What's a mess? This editorial of course. 'T'was like this:This editorial was supposed to be made up of comments and such on the Newark Conference for 1941, but since myself and my co-editors have had a slight change of mind, all our opinions of the Newarkon and the Denvention will be held off till next months issue, when will completely outline of plans, whether they be in favor of the Newarkon, the Denvention, both or neither. You see it's quite a problem, and we have all ready put our necks out to far we feel. At any rate we expect you can be looking forward to some startling news next issue. Now for some ramblings. Since this is being done directlyon the stencils all spelling must be excused. Bet you've heard that before! First about the cover story I wrote, "They're off". I advise you who read it(providing someone does)to do it all at one sitting, or else you might miss the point of the story.(Yes,there is a point!) First thing you noticed when you looked at SSp this time was the mis-spelling of They're on the cover, I bet. This was my blunder, and by the time we found it was mis-spelled, it was to late to correct it. The thing is,I knew how to spell it, but when I asked to make sure I was told I was wrong. I put down what I was told and---! NOTE TO ORLIN TREMAINE--Why doesn't [[underline]]comet[[end underline]] appear on any of the news stands in Westwood? Please try to get us at least three copies here in town. It is indeed terrible, when I have to Plotkin ship our copies from Florida! Speaking of [[underline]]Comet[[end underline]], I got a glimpse of it last week in NYC.From what I saw, which wasn't much, it seemed to be only a fair first issue. The cover was spoiled by a read, I believe it was red, banner slapped down the side, blarring forth the stories in bright lettering. Please MR. Trmaine, take a lesson from your ex-mag, [[underline]]Astounding[[end underline]], and remove all this gaudy stuff. Do you want to look like [[underline]]Amazing[[end underline]], or do you think your a comic magazine? Guess you aren't ever going to be the latter, since all the drawings in the comic books are superior to the majority of the junk you used to illustrate those stories. Take the one done for Wellman's yarn--Ugg. The long awaited second 1940 issue of Fantascience digest arrived a couple weeks ago, and looks very good. Madle has good material! Speaking of Bob Madle reminds me of the Phile Conference, to which Gaetz and I are going to this Sunday, the 10th of Nov.....Tom Wright's fan mag THE COMET came the same day as the FD(not Franklyn Delano either) and looks tops too. JJ Fortier thinks we should give credit to Wright for the paste in picture idea which we used several issues ago.Okay JJ we here do just that............ Predictions:United States enters war on Great Britains side before August 1941. President Roosevelt is either assassinated or diesof heart failure on dr before Oct. 1943, and Henry Wallace will take over. 1944: Henry Wallace elected President, and becomes dictator of these United States of America.(Note:If I were you, my dear reader, I wouldn't count on these predictions coming true, as I am just hopped up over friend Willkie's defeat. Lets hope not at any rate.)
