Page Ten -- Science Fiction Collector -- one had ever seen this fan in California but [[?]] was by far the most active of all western fans. He issued a string of fan phono records, edited a small pro-mag, [[?]] monthly radio programs, and corresponded with several hundred fans. But, since this Western fan had never been actually seen in person or in photograph, nor had attended any Conventions, nor granted any interviews, it was rather a bold thing to challenge one so established as this New York fan. Well, the fight flared to a white heat, as personal slander, trumped up charges, imaginative quotations, etc. were hurled back and forth. The "etc." however, did the most damage. Now, all throughout the great feud, the battle had been one of mutual admiration, conducted on a friendly basis, behind the scenes. Fandom thought it was deadly in earnest, but actually the two protagonists rather basked in the great publicity and the thrill of battling wits, evenly matched competition. When they met at the 1949 CONVENTION, the New York fan was terribly surprised to finally meet this mysterious California fan. So was the rest of fandom. It is a basic problem as to just why the mysterious California fan broke his custom to come to this of all Conventions. For the minute the Southern California fan was introduced to the audience, the fan world rocked its core. Gernsback turned over in his grave and wished he had stuck to SCIENCE AND INVENTIONS alone. It was known that the New York fan sent a picture of himself in the mysterious [[?]] California fan. Maybe that explained
