April, 1941 SUN SPOTS Page 15. "S_A_M_P_L_I_N_G_S", B_Y : "the sampler." FANTASTIC ADVENTURES, Marc, '41. High, 8; Low, 5.5; Average, 6.1. "Beyond the Time Door:" David O'Brien. This is the story of Mike Cardoni, killer and "rat", doomed to die in the electric chair for killing another of his kind. He has killed many "rats", but no "right guys." With two seconds to go, he finds himself transported to the year 3000, and a world of conditioned men, where no one can kill. In exchange for his life, he agrees to kill one man. He does so, but the man is a "right guy." Cardoni then forces his rescuer through "the time door," which still leads back to the electric chair, two seconds before the execution time. Then he shoots himself, adding one more "rat" to his long list. Opinion: Good story, splendid characterization. Rating, 8. THRILLING WONDER STORIES, Mar. '41. High, 7; Low, 4; Average, 6.2. "Stranger From The Stars" by Frederick Arnold Kummer. Ylyga Jactor is the only survivor of a space-ship wreck on a newly discovered planet. The natives are strangely emotional; and, after he revives a drowned youth, they hail him as a visitor from heaven. He antagonizes the priests of Marduk, but wins the support of the people by bringing rain. The priests rally an army to attack him and his supporters. He is saved by a rescue ship. Then old Izak, the scribe, writes, "Elija....(in) a chariot of fire....ascended to heaven." Opinion: A good rationalization of the story of the prophet, Elijah. Rating, 7. PLANET STORIES, Spring, '41. High, 8; Low, 4; Average, 6.7. "Exiles of the Desert Star:" by Ross Rocklynne. The planetoid Elron is needed as a signal base. The inhabitants, fifteen royal exiles from another system, will not leave. Diplomat-scientist Hallmeyer and his pilot transfer their egoes to Elronian bodies, to aid in effecting their task. The beautiful "Queen That is", does appeal to the submerged ego of her lover, whose body Hallmeyer inhabits. The pilot saves Hallmeyer. The atmosphere of the planetoid is transmuted to krypton, the Elronians are killed, and the planetoid, composed of a quartz-covered nickel-iron, is transformed into a giant sign-board by ionizing its inert atmosphere. Opinion: Very good. Worth reading for the description of their former ho[[?]] by the queen of the Elronians. Rating, 8. "Vampire of the Void;" by Neil R. Jones. This is the best so far of the many "Durna Rangue" tales. Jones is at his best at characterization, and this is almost entirely a study of Aonis, beautiful but deadly creation of the dread priesthood. She fascinates all men, and they die when she embraces them. Then she falls in love with a young neophyte of the order. It is a hopeless love, for she is as deadly as ever. The Sancturary is invaded. Aonis, under the mental control of the priests, attracts the invaders, to kill them one by one. She is killed by a Red Swordsman, who, being of a nonhuman race, is impervious to her charms. As she dies, her lover gathers her body into his arms. Opinion: A treat for lovers of Weird stories. Aonis is a fascinating character. Rating, 7.5. - - - - -THE END
