Merritt would have been comparable in shock to that of H.P. Lovecraft had Merritt been the intensive correspondent that Lovecraft was. But he was not, for Merritt had mastered what HPL had always refused to master--the art of being a good business man. Merritt know [knew] when he could afford to write letters and when he could not. He also knew the technique of getting his stories published, regardless of whether a golden word or two were changed by some clod of an editor to words less glittering. But Merritt was nevertheless a great friend of fandom when he could be and has justifiably deserved his high position as one of the three of four keystones of the present fantasy field. Merritt had a great deal of interest in fan magazines, received many of them, [illegible] them. He would have done a lot for fandom had he the time, but he did not.
