World STF Convention Huge Success! "TIME" MAGAZINE GIVES WRITE UP! It is doubtful if even the instigators of "The First World STF Convention" realized the true magnitude of the task they had appointed themselves when they attempted to present, in grand style, so all including an event as a "First World Science Fiction Convention". Yet, they succeeded beyond their wildest hopes and raised not only the stock of stf fandom in the eyes of the professional magazines, but the professional magazines in the eyes of the public as well. A reporter from "TIME" magazine, the great national news weekly, have almost a full page write-up of the affair in the July 10, 1939 issue of the magazine, on page 32 complete with special cuts of AMAZING and UNKNOWN, and a truly magnificent write-up of many phases of science fiction. The entire three day session reigned a memorable success. Sam Moskowitz, William S Sykora, James V Taurasi, Mario Racic Jr and all the others who helped certainly deserve a poem of thanks from not only the fans, but from the editors of all professional magazines as well. The development of the entire affair ranked upon sheer genius. To give an entire list of those present would take up most of the space in this issue. One notable fact, however, was the total absence of dead-tinder, almost everyone there was a true-blue fan as will be proved by the listings in the special convention issue of NEW FANDOM which will devote in detail many pages to the greatest of all scientifictional events -- THE WORLD SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION! The first day's session opened at 10 AM. Many fans had come in from such distant points as Vancouver, Canada, California, New Mexico, Texas and virtually every section of the country. Many there were, who glanced in awe at the fine hall that had been hired, adorned by the beautiful original cover paintings from THRILLING WONDER STORIES, STARTLING STORIES, STRANGE PUBLISHED EVERY WEEK by James V Taurasi, 137-07 32nd Ave, Flushing, New York FANTASY NEWS July 9, 1939 Vol 3 - No 3 Whole No. 55 3 issues 10¢ 9 issues 30¢
