THE CONVENTION (continuing the report of THE WORLD SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION) THE last event of the first great day was the auction. After the dinner recess, the fans again gathered in the Convention Hall, is the auction began. All the original drawing old issues of pro mags, unobtainable fan magazines etc etc were brought out upon the stage. Here the fans almost mobbed the stage in order to get a closer look at the fine material, but order was kept and Moskowitz started the ball rolling with the auction of an original illustration. From then on the material on the stage went like hot cakes with Moskowitz, Taurasi and Giunta taking turns auctioning the stuff off. THE: GALA SECOND DAY: The second great day of The WORLD STF CONVENTION was called to order at 2;00 PM. A Crowd of around 100 fans attended. The minutes of the first day were read and approved. Sam Moskowitz was called on to talk on "The Fan World Of The Future", which he did with his usual completeness, followed by Sykora with "Science & Science Fiction". We haven't a copy of their speeches on hand so can't go into details on them, but they'll be discussed completely in the 6th issue if NEW FANDOM out in a month. The picture and lecture "Seeing The Universe" was given next and an enjoyable lecture it was, telling us all about our sister planets and stars. A recess for refreshments was called and the fans dived into sandwiches and soda. The science discussion next scheduled on the program was dropped and the auction was continued from the previous day. As before,the auction, was a riot and the stuff sold as soon as displayed. With all the material on hand for auction sold, the Convention was recessed until the next event, the dinner in honor of PAUL, [NEXT COLUMN] T̲H̲E̲ ̲D̲I̲N̲N̲E̲R̲ The dinner was held at 58th Street in a private dining room. 30 or more fans authors and one editor, Charles D Hornig were present. The dinner was held in honor of FRANK R PAUL, best liked science fiction illustrator. Mr Paul took the honor seat at the head of the table with fans around and in front of him. The dinner went along smoothly with a few hitches here and there, where fans not used to this sort of thing, got slightly mixed up as to which, how, when and where to use the different eating tools. After the dinner proper, Will Sykora acting as master of ceremonies called on the guest of honor for a talk. Paul proudly stood up and passed the buck to Willy Ley who made an excellent speech. Sykora then begin calling on some of the important fans present. Charles D Hornig, Sam Moskowitz, Ray Van Houten, James V Taurasi, Mario Racic, Ackerman, Morojo, Walter Sullivan, Mark Reinsberg, all the women members of the QUEENS SFL and others had their say. The dinner talks over the fans milled around the room in small groups talking about every subject under the sun. Finally at around 1 o'clock all left the hall, and after a few minutes talk outside, homeward bound went all with the gala event forever locked in their memory. NEXT WEEK, we'll give you a complete report of the most amusing event of the three great days, THE BALL GAMEl Moving pictures of this game will be shown it the first meeting of the QUEENS SFL for 1939-40.
