FANTASY NEWS PAGE THREE PROFESSIONAL SCIENCE FICTION RATINGS by HARRY WARNER jr. ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION .. . JULY 1939 ... BLACK DESTROYER CITY OF THE COSMIC RAYS GREATER THAN GODS TRENDS LIGHTSHIP HO! THE VISASCREEN THE SUPERMAN, comic par excellent, began this week in THE NEW YORK POST. This is the first New York paper to carry it, tho the strip has been carried thruout the contry (country) for months. In the current issue of UNKNOWN on page 16, you'll find an illustration of a bell boy thrown against a news stand and magazines flying all over the place. Looking over the name of these magazines, you'll find that each and every one of them belong to the Street & Smith tribe, You'll also notice a few that can't be made out. In the original drawing these magazines that couldn't be made out were as plain as day. One was LIFE, another AMERICA and so on. S & S went over the original drawing and crossed out the names of the magazines that didn't belong to S&S. Issue Number three of JUNGLE STORIES hit the stands this week. It contains two excellent Tarzanlike stories. First and cover yarn is the third story of KIGOR and THE GIANT GORILLA MEN written by John Peter Drummond. Second is THE WHITE LORD OF THE ELEPHANT KINGDOM by Armand Brigaud, about a white child brought up by elephants We recommend this magazine to all who like Trazanlike stories. The British TALES OP WONDER number 7 also came in this week. It contains an excellent cover by "Nick" which, tho absolutely good contains a rocket ship that is a direct copy of a rocket ship by Wallace Saaty on page 115 of the MAY 1936 issue of ASTOUNDING. This issue of TALES OF WONDER contains two reprints, THE VENUS ADVENTURE by John Beyon and THE YEAST MEN by Dr. Keller, both are excellent as are the rest of the stories in the issue. The inside illustrations are by Turner and are very good, tho a little too small. The third issue of FANTASY will be out on July 20th and will be published quarterly thereafter. The editors of DYNAMIC SCIENCE STORIES have not as yet picked any stories for the third issue, tho it is over two months late now. They are thinking of using a new policy and promise news of the magazine in around two or three weeks.
