Reverie 3 unsavory facts more closely, the truth begins to emerge from the flapdoodle, and we discover ourselves to be quite as reprehensible as our venal representatives, if not more so.This deplorable state of affairs stems from various social causes, but in effect it means only one thing; as a nation we are tragically deficient in public spirit, civic intelligence and integrity. For that matter, so are nearly all nations. Enlightened altruism is not a living force, it is only a word in the dictionary. Nor can it seriously be maintained that the precepts of Christianity are a living force, so long as civilized nations continue to practice wholesale murder; they are still preached, but they are inoperative. In spite of Christianity and in spite of material civilization, man is still a predatory beast of the jungle, living by right of might, slaying and being slain. In some nations these ancient ferocities have been exalted in a new and cold-blooded philosophy; in others they are deprecated, copied or tacitly condoned. Back of all the tyranny, injustice and savage slaughter looms the inescapable conviction that we are simply getting what we asked for. If the servant abuses his master with impunity, the master must be a spineless craven; if a hundred million people are looted, regimented and enslaved by a mere handful of servants, one must conclude that they deserve to be enslaved. I am not so foolish as to think that ruthless minorities can easily be overcome, for ruthless minorities have ruled and destroyed since the beginning of time. But I am deeply concerned in our predicament. What can be done to better the situation? A general spiritual renaissance might be the answer, but miracles cannot be commanded. Failing that, a
